Dear Curious Folk,
CuriousWorks has had a major milestone moment this month when our first feature film, Riz, was selected for the Sydney Film Festival!

This prestigious recognition is an incredible success on a number of fronts for this coming-of-age story set in multicultural Western Sydney. Not only is it CuriousWorks’ debut feature film, Riz is also the first for co-writers and directors Guido Gonzalez (one of our Cultural Leaders) and S. Shakthidharan (CuriousWorks Artistic Director).

It was made on an $85,000 shoestring budget, using local debut actors and a crew that included aspiring film-makers from our Curious Creators program for Western Sydney's young cultural leaders.

Riz is based on Guido’s real life experiences growing up in Cabramatta. Click here to see the trailer and read more about the film.

We’ve got some extra entertainment planned for the Casula Powerhouse screening, so come early and enjoy the bar, café and Kurinji playing live music in the foyer from the soundtrack they created for Riz. They will be joined by cast member Patrick Uy from the Dauntless MC crew demonstrating his breakdancing skills. And there will be a directors’ Q&A after the screening. Get a group together and make a night of it!
We’ve just completed our annual report and it was a chance for us to relive all the community and artistic highlights of 2014. There were plenty to inspire us! If you don’t have time to pore through the full document, check out the snappy three-minute video version.
We recently committed to strengthening our links with existing communities and expanding our reach to new ones by making two key additions to the team.

We welcomed Caitlin Newton-Broad as our new Community Director and Gary Spink as our first Communications Director. Both bring extensive experience to their roles that will benefit our future plans at this exciting time in the company’s development.

Read more about that (and them) here.
We hope you’ve enjoyed the six new short films released online in recent weeks as our second Meet+Eat series.

Congratulations to directors Mark Taylor and Emma Macey-Storch who uncovered some delightful and thought-provoking cross-cultural stories based around the simple concept of getting people together to share a meal. If you haven’t viewed them all, or missed the wonderful premiere events at Broadmeadows in Melbourne or Bonnyrigg in Sydney, they are still online at

The Melbourne films also got some big screen exposure on the huge outdoor screen in the city’s Federation Square at a free public event last month.
