A Counting and Cracking of Heads is one of nine plays that have been selected for development by Playwriting Australia.
Written by our artistic director Shakthi after years of engagement with the Sri Lankan Australian and diasporic communities, the play follows one family’s decision to flee the violence in their native country and their resettlement in Australia over four generations.
The play is a large scale co-production between CuriousWorks and Belvoir and is planned to premiere in one of the theatre company’s upcoming seasons.
Playwrighting Australia will support the script development with funding a week of creative workshops with professional actors and a dramaturg. We envisage this as a major step towards finalising the work for rehearsals due to begin next year.
