Welcome, the Door is Open!

Hello! How are you all settling into the year? After the excitement of New Beginnings Festival in January, we’re settling in nicely at our (still relatively new) office in Fairfield.

Part of making Fairfield HQ our new home means we’ve been able to introduce our new Open Door Policy. We’re kicking it off later this month with our first open door days. Be sure to book in a time with us or drop by on the days.

The works from last years Utopia workshops with artist Emmanuel Assante and the students of Liverpool Girls and Liverpool Boys also had their first public exhibition at Bankstown Arts Centre. Be sure to check out the new Utopia: Painting for Peace and Cultural Wellbeing exhibit from Friday, 8 March to Saturday, 27 April.

FUNPARK has celebrated some recent milestones. FUNPARK not only bade farewell to Daisy Montalvo as the outgoing Program Director, they also launched the 2024 Strength in Stories calendar. Next up: the big community touch football game with local emergency services! Save the date: Wednesday, March 20th at Bidwill Reserve.

Lastly, we have two programs starting up again! Curiously West Film Club had its first meeting of 2024 last week, and Testing Grounds is now open for applications for the 2024 cohort. We’re excited to see what everyone creates this year. Look out for future news in your inbox or on our socials including: A new drop-in workshop series, and the start of our upcoming new program, Future Culture.

Open Door Days: March 26 + 27

Starting out as a professional artist or arts worker can be lonely. Even artists and organisations that try to be friendly can feel hard to approach. At CuriousWorks, we’re trying to solve that with our Open Door Days.

Open Door Days are days specifically for CuriousWorks to talk to you. It’s a part of our Open Door Policy where we carving out days throughout the year for local creatives to come in and connect.

Whether you’re seeking professional insights, guidance, a sounding board, or simply want to talk about what we do here at CuriousWorks, our doors are open. We’re here to listen and answer any of your burning questions, or just to chat and get to know each other better.

Book in a time with one of our staff and come visit us at Fairfield City HQ for a cuppa and a chat. If you can’t make it in person, you can book a video call instead. Drop-ins are also welcome on the dates mentioned above – but you might have to wait if we’re chatting to someone else.

You can learn more about our Open Door Days on our website  here.

Utopia is Open at Bankstown

What does peace look like in the eyes of young people?

Last Friday was the  opening for the Utopia: Painting for Peace and Cultural Wellbeing exhibition at Bankstown Arts Centre. In a series of workshops delivered in 2023 and 2024, artist Emmanuel Asante worked with students from Liverpool Girls and Liverpool Boys High Schools to create new artworks on peace and wellbeing. Emmanuel and several of the student artists spoke to the audience about their works and the program.

These works, alongside Emmanuel’s own works on the themes of peace and wellbeing, are now being exhibited at Bankstown Arts Centre from Friday 8 March to Saturday 27 April. Be sure to head down to Bankstown to check out the exhibit!

This project was led by Emmanuel Asante who worked with students from Liverpool Boys and Liverpool Girls High Schools. It was funded by Western Sydney University and produced by CuriousWorks. The Utopia: Painting for Peace and Cultural Wellbeing exhibition is presented by Bankstown Arts Centre.

The Stories of Mount Druitt

FUNPARK launched their Strength in Stories calendar last month at Blacktown Arts Centre. The Strength in Stories calendar brought together multiple groups, organisations and individuals from across Mount Druitt. The launch was a beautiful opportunity to share space, share food and celebrate unsung heroes of our community.

Coming up next, FUNPARK is hosting a community touch football game! Local volunteers will be playing alongside Bidwill local heroes – from emergency service workers and educators to local community leaders.

Join the heart of the Bidwill community for this exciting game at Bidwill Reserve, Wednesday March 8th!
